Croatia 2015: Mountains, Rivers and Sea
Ann joined 15 other Sierra Club members to sample the delights of this small country tucked away in the east side of the Adriatic Sea. Croatia is slightly smaller than West Virginia, with a population of nearly 4.5 million people. Along with the other 6 nations of the former Yugoslavia, it is located at a crossroads between the east and the west. Over the centuries, this part of the world has been dominated by a succession of outside powers, whether Rome, Venice, the Ottoman Empire, the French Empire, or the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Croatia declared independence in 1991, yet for the next 4 years, it was embroiled in the tragic wars in the Balkans. Throughout our trip, we saw evidence of Croatia’s recent history, from the pride the Croatian people have in the nation they are building, to a series of war memorials.
